About Nipigon Paddling
Nipigon offers paddlers a unique chance to explore hundreds of small inland lakes, lazy rivers, fast-flowing rivers, and even the vast expanse of Lake Superior, all from the water. With options for flatwater paddling, whitewater adventures, river kayaking, and sea kayaking, there’s something for every skill level.
A highlight for paddlers is the Lake Superior Water Trail, which stretches 1,000 kilometres along the Canadian coastline of Lake Superior between Gros Cap Marina Park in Whitefish Bay and Fisherman’s Park in Thunder Bay. This on-water portion of the Trans Canada Trail connects paddlers to one of the greatest freshwater expanses on Earth, offering scenic vistas and a sense of adventure that spans the region.
The Nipigon Marina is a key access point to the water trail. Launch from the accessible EZ Dock at the southern tip of the marina, where amenities include composting toilets, picnic areas, tenting sites, interpretive signage, maps, and safety information. The marina is also steps away from the Nipigon River Recreation Trail, making it easy to combine a paddle with a scenic hike. Paddlers can enjoy trips downriver toward Red Rock, though arranging a shuttle is recommended due to strong currents, or take a leisurely flatwater paddle through the Nipigon Lagoon, spotting fish, ducks, beaver, and otters along the way. A canoe and kayaks are available for rent at the marina, and a kiosk provides additional information and supplies.
For a tranquil inland experience, Lofquist Lake is a perfect choice. Located just a 10-minute drive off Highway 11/17, this deep, spring-fed lake offers a sandy public beach, ample parking, picnic tables, changerooms, benches, and outhouses. Surrounded by coniferous forest and dotted with cottages, the lake is a popular spot for paddlers and wildlife enthusiasts alike, with bald eagles often soaring overhead.
Whether you’re seeking a relaxing flatwater paddle, a challenging river adventure, or a scenic day on an inland lake, Nipigon provides exceptional paddling experiences with access to some of Ontario’s most stunning waterways.
