About Mazukama Falls

Mazukama Falls is a wild, breathtaking escape located about 20 kilometres east of Nipigon, reachable via Highway 17 and a short turn onto Camp 81 Road. This adventure begins with a moderately short but steep and rugged 3.1 kilometre loop trail that winds through ancient cedar forest, past fern covered boulders, across cascading streams, and over the red rocks of the cliffs that feed the falls.

As you hike upward, with some sections demanding careful footing and perhaps a creek crossing you’ll first pass a series of smaller cascades and rapids. The real reward comes when you arrive at the dramatic 25 metre drop of Mazukama Falls, where water plunges from the cliffs into a serene pool below. The sound of rushing water, the moss and cedar scented air, and the rock formations make this a place that feels like stepping into a Northern Ontario fairy tale.

For those eager for more adventure and panoramic views, a steeper spur trail climbs from the falls up the cliffs along a route known locally as “The Stairway of the Saints.” This extension leads to the Wingtip Lookout, perched high above with sweeping views over Lake Superior and Nipigon Bay. Taking this detour turns the outing into a roughly 6.7 kilometre return journey, a full day excursion that rewards both with natural beauty and a sense of accomplishment.

Mazukama Falls isn’t just a summer destination. In the colder months the cascading water can freeze into spectacular ice formations that draw winter season adventurers. Wrapped in snow and ice, the falls and surrounding forest take on a magical, other worldly beauty.

Visiting Mazukama Falls is a chance to step away from the everyday, to immerse yourself in raw nature, and to challenge yourself on a hike that’s as rewarding as it is beautiful. Whether you come for a quick loop or extend to the lookout, you’ll walk away with a deep appreciation for the rugged charm of Ontario’s North Shore and memories of water, forest and cliffs that stay with you long after the trip ends.
