About The Nipigon River Recreation Trail

The Nipigon River Recreation Trail is a rugged, 10.1-kilometre wilderness trail that follows the scenic Nipigon River from the Nipigon Marina to the town of Red Rock, offering some of the most breathtaking views of the river, Nipigon Bay, and Lake Superior, the world’s largest freshwater lake. The trail is rated moderate to difficult, with a mix of shoreline paths, forested terrain, and some steep sections. Along the way, hikers may spot wildlife including white pelicans, bald eagles, peregrine falcons, great blue herons, and otters.

For those with limited time, shorter options allow visitors to still enjoy the highlights. From the Red Rock trailhead, a 40-minute, 2.6-kilometre return hike leads to Lloyd’s Lookout, a panoramic viewpoint over the river and bay. A few minutes further, visitors can relax in the iconic Parks Canada red chairs. From the Nipigon Marina trailhead, a 2–3 kilometre stretch of mostly flat shoreline trail provides a gentle walk along the river’s edge.

Hiking the trail is not only a chance to see stunning scenery and wildlife, it’s also great for health. The varied terrain strengthens muscles, improves cardiovascular fitness, and provides mental refreshment by connecting with nature.

For the best experience, it is recommended to start at the Red Rock trailhead and arrange a ride or shuttle from Nipigon back to your vehicle. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and a fully charged cell phone for safety. Whether hiking a short section or tackling the full trail, the Nipigon River Recreation Trail offers a memorable adventure along one of Ontario’s most beautiful rivers.
