About the Mazukama Falls Trail

The Mazukama Falls Trail is a challenging and unforgettable hike that showcases some of Nipigon’s most dramatic natural scenery. This 3.1-kilometre loop takes 1.5–2 hours to complete, though adventurous hikers can add the optional, challenging Wingtip Lookout spur, bringing the round trip to 6.7 kilometres. Rated difficult, the trail is designed for experienced hikers prepared for steep climbs, unstable footing, and creek crossings that may require wading. Proper footwear, water, and preparation are essential.

The hike begins gently, working towards a steep 500-metre ascent alongside the cascading Mazukama Creek, passing a series of small waterfalls before reaching the impressive 25-metre Mazukama Falls. Towering old-growth cedars and moss-covered boulders create a sense of serenity as you take in the cool forest shade. From there, the trail follows the base of the Kama Cliffs, weaving past massive fern-draped rocks and descending into the tranquil “Enchanted Forest,” a grove of ancient cedars that gives the trail its magical atmosphere.

For those seeking a spectacular vantage point, the Wingtip Lookout spur continues up the steep Stairway of the Saints, climbing 250 metres above the trailhead to reveal panoramic views of Nipigon Bay, Lake Superior, and the surrounding North Shore landscape. This steep, rewarding extension adds roughly two hours to the hike and is a must for avid hikers.

Maintained by volunteers of the Nor’wester Voyageur Trail Club under the Voyageur Trail Association (VTA), the Mazukama Trail is part of a network of trails that highlight the North Shore’s rugged beauty. Membership in the VTA supports trail maintenance and provides access to detailed maps and GPX tracks.

Whether hiking the loop alone or adding the Wingtip Lookout, the Mazukama Trail offers waterfalls, old-growth forest, dramatic cliffs, and the quiet magic of northern Ontario. In winter, the trail transforms with spectacular ice formations, making it a year-round destination for those prepared for a challenge.
