About The Deer Lake Mountain Trail
The Deer Lake Mountain Trail is one of Nipigon’s most rewarding hikes, offering a 6.6-kilometre loop filled with breathtaking scenery and outdoor adventure. Rated moderate to difficult, the trail begins with a steep climb in the first 2.5 kilometres when hiked counterclockwise, followed by a more gradual descent, making it both challenging and enjoyable for hikers looking for a full-body workout.
The trail winds through old-growth cedar forest and leads to cliff-top lookouts, each offering sweeping views of Nipigon Bay, the Nipigon River, Deer Lake, No Good Lake, Lofquist Lake, and Black Bay. Short branch trails along the route provide access to the serene shores of No Good Lake and Lofquist Lake, perfect spots to pause, take photos, or simply enjoy the peace of nature.
Maintained by volunteers of the Nor’wester Voyageur Trail Club under the Voyageur Trail Association (VTA), the Deer Lake Mountain Trail is part of a larger network of trails designed to showcase the North Shore’s natural beauty. Membership in the VTA supports trail maintenance and provides access to detailed maps and GPX tracks for planning your hike.
Whether you’re seeking a challenging adventure, unforgettable views, or peaceful moments in the forest, the Deer Lake Mountain Trail offers a truly memorable experience in Nipigon. It’s a hike that rewards effort with spectacular scenery and a deep connection to the North Shore landscape.
