The Nipigon Fall Fishing Festival is a beloved community tradition and one of the longest‑running events on the North Shore. Celebrated each Labour Day long weekend, the festival brings together anglers, families, and visitors for a lively mix of fishing, competition, community fun, and seasonal celebration in the heart of Northwestern Ontario.
For more than six decades, the festival has grown from a simple fishing derby into a four‑day event with something for everyone. At its core is the fishing competition, where anglers of all ages test their skills on the Nipigon River and regional waters with prizes for the biggest catches. Around this, visitors can enjoy a vendor market featuring local food and artisans, card tournaments, a 5K walk/run, and a mixed slo‑pitch baseball tournament that highlights community spirit.
The festival also features lively social events such as trivia night, live music entertainment on multiple nights, and one of the festival’s most anticipated features, the Giant Penny Auction, with prizes donated by local businesses. A festival parade through downtown brings colourful floats and local groups together to kick off Saturday festivities, and family‑friendly activities from firefighter‑themed challenges to fun races make it a great weekend for all ages.
Children are welcomed too, with the Huck Finn Derby giving young anglers a chance to get in on the action, and community events like family races and entertainment keep the weekend full of smiles and memories.
More than a fishing celebration, the Nipigon Fall Fishing Festival is a vibrant showcase of local spirit, seasonal beauty, and community connection where visitors can enjoy autumn scenery, friendly competition, and a true taste of Nipigon hospitality.
