About Fishing in Nipigon

Nipigon is a fishing destination that draws anglers from across Ontario and beyond. The area is famous for its variety of waters, including the Nipigon River, Lake Nipigon, and Lake Superior, each offering its own unique challenges and rewards.

The Nipigon River is legendary for its brook trout. It is the tributary where the world record brook trout was caught in 1915. Cold, clear waters make it ideal for fly fishing, wading, and drift boat fishing. The river also holds salmon, lake trout, steelhead, northern pike and walleye (protected), giving anglers plenty of options.

Lake Nipigon, Ontario’s largest lake entirely within the province, is perfect for trolling, casting, or ice fishing in winter. It’s home to monster lake trout, walleye, and northern pike, with secluded coves and bays offering productive spots for both novice and experienced fishermen. In February of 2026, a young Nipigon based angler caught an Ontario record smashing 23.04 lbs burbot (or ling) in Lake Nipigon.

Lake Superior provides the thrill of fishing in one of the world’s largest freshwater lakes. Salmon, lake trout, and whitefish are popular targets, with both boat and shore fishing opportunities near Nipigon Bay.

Fishing here changes with the seasons. Spring is excellent for walleye and pike, summer is ideal for trolling and fly fishing, fall brings active trout, and winter offers ice fishing for lake trout and northern pike.

With its variety of waters, abundant species, and breathtaking scenery, Nipigon remains a must-visit destination for anglers of all skill levels. It’s a place to chase trophy fish, enjoy quiet waters, and experience the history and legend of world-class northern Ontario fishing.
